This morning I listened to the first two-thirds of this years’ discussion. The two keynote speakers were interesting and hopefully helpful in terms of how I think about my thesis project. Steven Handel discussed his efforts to plan habitat patches in urban areas, like landfills. It is useful to know that the group has had some success with bringing habitat back to the urban landscape.
Paul Stamets spoke about the wonders of mushrooms, and I believe “wonders” is the right word. Some things I learned about fungi today: 1: Fungi has successfully redesigned the Tokyo subway system more efficiently. 2: In extinction events, organisms that “pair” with fungi survive, as opposed to those which don’t and don’t. And it is still everywhere. 3: Mycofiltration is the use of mushrooms to filter water, and is extremely effective. 4: Mushrooms can get carpenter ants out of your house, won’t kill the bees, and won’t poison your land. Basically, mushrooms will save the world. I hear he has done a Ted talk, so I will have to check that out. I really want to incorporate something about this idea into my project, but I fear it may not have anything to do with the idea.
I thought it was an amazing talk as well. Rather than thinking mushrooms, take the analogy. Could you think about how you could create symbiotic relationships between unlike elements or users? Could there be a self-balancing network (structural, lighting, energy) that supports the activity inside your building? Could you use bioremediation to make the air better on your site? I hope you can marry your artistic visions with the scale of a pedestrian, the car, the city.
