Oh what a week! After finally landing on us territory ( got stopped at the Canadian border for visa issues ) and missing the two first days of class, catching up with the first week of school has been quite interesting. Realizing that my building’s program was way too tiny ( 13000 sq ft ) and nebulous ( Social Tissue Center? ) some rethinking took place. First on the list “beefing” up the program; the social tissue center will not only be a multi-layered facade with exhibition space, offices and bicycle storage but will also contain a stage for rising performers, a cinema, suspended green spaces ( parks ), a restaurant and possibly a community pool, radio station, art making spaces, digital halls and more exhibition spaces both outside and inside. Offering a wide range of activities this building will encourage the exploration and development of new interests, encouraging interactions and therefore building social tissue. A person interested in swimming may well discover a taste for art or enjoy and discover a new band.
I also realized that we already have a name for this ” social tissue center “….community center, yes kinda felt foolish when that struck my mind but to my defense I hope that the activated facade and parasitic nodes throughout the city give it a little edge over other community centers. Speaking of which: when stuck in Toronto last Wednesday I found this weird 8 foot box with an interactive touch screen that allowed people to find themselves around the city. Some kind of static gps built by LSQUARED. It has giving me some good inspiration for the “nodes”.
