How to contribute, architecturally, towards providing a healthy environment in which we can encourage students to learn. Today the majority of American schools are architecturally out dated. Some of these schools do not provide spatial arrangements that can adequately lend themselves for students to learn at their own pace. For instance, creating spaces that lend themselves for transformation can provide flexibility for learning environments. Many schools are also detached from their surrounding environments. Finding ways to interconnect the environment to the learning system could potentially contribute towards bettering the education of students.
I have been looking at Jefferson High school, as a potential site, which is located in Northeast portland. I am looking at this site and looking at its context, for instance the close connection between PCC. This high school was being considered to be one of the schools that would close its doors to student in the portland area. The sites lends itself for historical and cultural exploration of how this can start to influence my thesis.
