Biomimetics

This video, produced by the nanotechnology department at Cambridge University, offers a great overview of nanotechnology, how we are using it to understand natural processes, and the implications these new understandings have on design. The ability to observe, alter, and extract systematic information on a micro scale and apply them to the macro scale has the potential to profoundly alter the way we design. This notion, and the fact that the diagrams and animations in the video are well done, are what inspired me to share.

asknature.org  is an open source online pool of ideas and strategies concerning biomimetics. The site catalogues a number of useful strategies, products, contacts, and other resources related to biomimicry. The forum on the site is a great way to get connected to other like minded designers and has the potential to be a source for answers to questions and inspiration for design.

This blog is updated frequently and has a variety of cool projects concerned in   one way or another, with biomimetics. Relevant TED talks are often posted, as   well as student work. The site seems to favor more algorithmic and organically generated architecture, which may be helpful in the future as we move toward design work.

In his essay, Digital Biomimetic Architecture, Dennis Dollen writes about his approach to biomimetics for design and how studying forms and processes in nature has informed his work. Though he is an academic, teaching at Bio-Digital Architectures Program at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Dollen presents his views in a cogent and relatively straight forward manner, which I appreciate. Examples of Dollen’s work can be seen here and here

Thanks for posting your web references as well as books. The biomimetics look interesting. I will be sure to add an updated post with Online ref’s as well.

  • I am selling my house in a suburban Houston and my furnishings is in good condition, but not completely new. So should I think about representing the home furnished or unfurnished just before placing it in the marketplace? What’s the best strategy?
