One response to “A “subtractive barrier””

  1. Claire, Good to see you figuring out the intentions for your project. It sounds like you want the piece to have the kind of challenging and engaging aspect that Donald Judd’s installations have – something that transforms the space and helps you understand the existing condition in a new way.

I am glad you are searching for new sources that support the ideas you are seeking. I am only familiar with the work of Dan Flavin. I am interested in learning more about the books you have found. I have enjoyed reading essays by Lawrence Weschler – his book on Robert Irwin, “Seeing Is Forgetting the Name of the Thing One Sees”, expands on the chapter I assigned.

Because your work is so site-specific, it seems like you need to try hanging different kinds of material in that location so you can see how the light works with the material properties. Perhaps you can go to a lighting outlet or get scrap rolls of fabric, paper or cardboard to try out large scale place-holders for translucent shadow or reflective effects.

Would you be able to create a sketch and a condensed version of your descriptive text so we can get an approval from the building manager? They are mostly worried about the logistics of structural stability and safety: they don’t want anything to fall or poke someone’s eye out. A photo of the location with the location of the installation outlined would be helpful.
