This studio will explore the potential of Rigid Surface Structures in Architecture. In the design and realization of Rigid Surface Structures, form, structural behavior and construction techniques are closely related. Students will explore both the structural and non-structural qualities of Rigid Surface Structures through material and formal investigation as well as small scale design exercises. The term will culminate with students exploring the design of a Place of Worship sited in the rural wilderness of Oregon. Teamwork and collaboration will be encouraged in the design of the Place of Worship. Students will be expected to communicate and test their design intentions through various means of simulation and representation including form-finding, digital modelling and analysis and physical mock-ups. There will likely be corresponding tutorials throughout the term in the use of digital form-finding software and structural analysis to assist in the development of appropriate structural forms. As a result, students will benefit from having access to a windows operating system on their computers.
