Assignment
This assignment asks you to propose, design and build a Rigid Surface structure in the courtyard of Lawrence Hall. This exercise is meant to further our understanding of the design processes of Rigid Surface structures as well as inform our understanding of how critical the fabrication and erection process is in the design of Rigid Surface structures. Students will work individually to develop a schematic proposal for a space of contemplation in the courtyard of Lawrence and will then work in small groups to develop a few of the initial proposals. We will ultimately select a single design to further develop and build as a studio. Students will apply for approval from the Architecture and Allied Arts House Committee and, once approved, build their Rigid Installation. Designs shall carefully consider the restrictions imposed by the house committee (read the application carefully) as well as time and material cost limitations.
Process
Individuals will present their initial design schemes proposals to the entire studio on Monday October 28. Students will then vote on the proposals and each of the top four (4) proposals will be further refined by a group of three (3) students. Groups will then present developed design schemes for their proposal to the studio on Monday November 4. At this time we will select a single proposal to be refined and finalized for submittal to the house committee for approval and ultimately built. Students should continue to utilize physical and digital modeling as a means of design and form development.
A detailed budget must be provided as part of your proposal and some funding will be available to help offset costs of materials.
All documentation shall be presented on 11×17 sheets (landscape orientation) with members of each group utilizing a single document template. Groups members should work together to determine the document template early in order to facilitate efficient documentation.
