In order: Cheap dollar store glass, water + plastic bag, sheet of ice 1/2″ thick, macro view of ice sheet, ice with melted hole.
These are refined explorations of some material studies of transparency. I began with glass, examining overlap of transparent material to create a quilted hierarchical pattern of dark and light. To seek out some greater dynamism in caustics and shadows I began to experiment with water and ice. The water’s refraction of light produced some fantastic focusing/diffusing effects depending on the orientation of the bag. The bag’s shape lent itself to this focusing, and the lighting effect was directly related to the amount of water the light passed through. My last exploration dealt with rendering the water’s refractive effects static. Freezing tap water creates a cloudy, ethereal refraction. Had I frozen distilled water, the effect would have possessed a bit more clarity to it, but it was this ethereal quality that I had sought out to pursue in this experiment.
