The above light panels are 12″x12″ using several different 2d media of “found” /premanufactured objects. I selected to study their shadow effects because of their inherent aesthetics of structure and pattern. I was interested in how the manipulation of shape and direction of light effect the shadows and how effective the screens are in creating different experiential qualities of light and shadow.Â
The two twisted , curtain-like screens create a balance of light and shadow with their symmetry, but also carefully regulate the gradient of light as they exhibit the materials structure, which renders clear to the eye from multiple angles and lighting conditions. The third screen is made of strips of net/grid paper which have strips of transparency paper with printed patterns “woven” into them perpendicularly. The overlaying shadows of both materials create an interesting “pixelation” of light as if to make clear its man-made nature through its pattern. The aesthetics of this phenomena has interested me before and I will likely pursue creating a similar effect in my final project.
