1- massing/space study

1- pick 1 or 2 main spaces. and study them using case studies (at least 3 case studies – use other students’ work on WordPress or new cases online). Pay attention to form; size; height; lighting; views to and from; circulation to and within;  land; orientation; material

2- go to Archdaily.com or other sites and search with the name of this space (e.g. community hall).

3- now back to our site. What are the best designs for this space? (5+ fast sketches)

4- develop 2+ different conceptual designs with an emphasis on this space(s). This means you assume other spaces will be worked out later, but this one must have a good form, placement, adjacency, view etc.

You may use your past conceptual designs as a starting point or work on a new idea.

If you have alternatives to the same theme, bring them too, but they do not count as your second scheme.

use section, plan, model, diagram, and any other relevant media for developing your ideas.

Deliverables for massing study:

For each scheme, bring the minimum of: (1) schematic floor plan (and site plan); (2) schematic section (from the main space and showing the slope).  (3) Either sketch model or 2 perspectives. Feel free to add arrows and other diagrammatic elements to your drawings. (4) inspirations /precedents / studies

compose each scheme on one 17 x 11 (B&W or color print)

NOTE: site model is due Friday. If you’ve selected your site, you can make it now (1/16″)

2- program diagram.

  1. go over the brief and summarize it
  2. compose a spatial relationship diagram. (follow the steps and tips on the lecture -file posted to Canvas)

you can draw it by hand or digitally. If digital, make a color print on letter size.
