Conceptual designs (3 overall)

Due Mon. 10/11

Steps:

    1. complete if needed: Case-study sketches (5+ complete Wednesday’s class activity)
    2. complete if needed: Site sketches (5+ complete Friday’s class activity)
    3. draw a 300’x100′ rectangle to scale (on any site plan you are using). This is the size of your building if it is one story high. This should give you a good sense of how large our structure is.
    4. review the brief
    5. review all site analysis and principles. Pick 10 major guidelines/principles/potentials. Each concept must respond to one or more of these.
    6. 6+ fast sketches. Be as diverse as you can. Don’t be too judgmental of your ideas.
    7. pick 3 ideas to develop into conceptual design. At least 2 must be very different.
    8. Find relevant inspirations/presidents. (Often a building. It need not to have a similar function as ours)
    9. Develop them through different media: plan; section; perspective; diagram; model

Expectation

  • No concept is off limit at this phase.
  • all conceptual designs must respond to 2+ site condition (e.g. Slope; view; existing structure; access; events; etc.). This is best shown by small diagrams
  • They cannot be iterations of the same idea.

Deliverables

For each conceptual design, include:

  • concept (a few words)
  • inspiration images
  • relevant drawings. The focus is representing your idea, not your presentation skills. Typical conceptual designs have schematic plan, section, and many diagrams.
  • A 3D sketch model. (at least 1 must be a physical model). If using the class model (1” = 64’) take pictures. Otherwise, make your own topography.
  • All printed on one 11×17 (3 pages for 3 concepts
