Uruguay currently has a GDP is 59.32 billion US dollars and they are ranked 79 in the world economies index. Uruguay is losing 13% of its GDP per capita due to its inequality between genders since women are unable to participate in the labor market. It’s projected that if women were in the labor market, each person could make around $2,100 more per person. Currently in Uruguay women don’t have these job opportunities, and they are also compensated 31% less for the same work. Unfortunately COVID may have caused an even larger set back for women in Uruguay. In response to the obvious discrimination in Uruguay, a campaign called #mujeresuruguay has been created to share facts and the stories of many women who have been affected by the work force inequality. Along with #mujeresuruguay there was a report published by world banks, and studies the many sectors where women face barriers simply due to their genders. Some of the many barriers women face include; quality of employment, economic opportunities, pay gap, aging, education, violence, decision-making and care work, and more. Reports show the 31% pay gap,”Women own less than 12% of companies and hold only 11% of management positions.” (worldbank) and few women were given positions in science and technology careers, with only 23% women studying engineering. Women also have been shown to do more 11% domestic work than men, and unpaid domestic work represents 16% of the countries GDP. Both the #mujeresuruguay and the report hope that in the future women’s rights can be respected by Uruguay government and inequality between gender can become lesser. And as statistics show it would in fact be beneficial for Uruguay’s economy.
