On Nov. 14, we had the pleasure of welcoming and chatting with Jen Eisemann, a Digital Media Coordinator for the San Francisco Giants. Jen graduated from the University of Oregon in 2014. While here at Oregon, Jen was a Digital Strategist for the Quack Cave and an Account Supervisor at Allen Hall Public Relations.

Jen started her current position at the Giants in 2016. Prior to her current position, she was an Assistant Account Executive for WE Communications.

Check out our top three takeaways from Jen:

Always say ‘Yes’

Jen emphasized to always be a ‘yes man.’ This means that you should take every opportunity that comes your way even if it frightens you. While working for the San Francisco Giants, Jen has had to learn and try a lot of new things. She advises young professionals to not be afraid to fail but learn to fall gracefully. Not every idea is going to work but know that you can learn from your mistakes. For Jen, saying yes to opportunities and experiences has allowed her to grow as a person. When an opportunity arises that will give you the chance to better your skill set, knowledge, experiences, and yourself, just say yes.

Do What You Love

You don’t work in sports because it pays a lot, you do it because you love it. For Jen, getting to work with the Giants and doing what she is passionate about every day is worth not making a fortune. She told us that it is important to find what you like to do in your field of study and do it because if you love what you do it shows in the quality of your work.

How to Stand Out

As part of her job, Jen is on a team that hires interns. After going through application after application, all of them start to feel the same. That is why Jen says it is very important to have a good cover letter. It will not only help you stand out from the rest, but it will also give a great first impression. Recently as Jen sifted through applications, many from the UO School of Journalism and Communications stood out to her. She gives credit to the professors here at the University of Oregon for the strong cover letters she saw because they ingrain such important writing skills in their students.  Along with a strong cover letter and resume, Jen advises learning as many special skills as possible, for example, Photoshop or video editing, while you are still in college. This will give you a little extra boost with employers.
