The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) has contracted with the University of Oregon (UO) Center on Teaching and Learning (CTL) to develop early literacy screening tools for Kindergarten through Grade 5 in up to ten indigenous languages over five years. Work is currently proceeding in three languages — Iñupiaq, Tlingít, and Yup’ik — with more languages to come soon. This work will help schools teaching reading in Alaska Native languages to meet the screening requirements of the Alaska Reads Act.
