Project Overview

This project will move the UO American English Institute’s Intensive English Program (IEP) and Innovative Programming (IP) or non-credit student and course records and business processes into Banner, the university’s central enterprise resource management system.

Since 1978, the American English Institute (AEI) has been a leader in English language teaching, research, and service on the UO campus and around the world. The AEI supports the University in the integration of international students into all aspects of campus life and collaborates with faculty across campus toward creating a successful academic experience for all international students. Formerly part of the Department of Linguistics, AEI became a separate unit within the College of Arts and Sciences in 2014.

Because of the AEI’s unique offerings, use of non-credit course offerings, and other factors, the AEI currently relies on a home-built information system for maintaining much of its data and processes — over 14,000 unique records in all. The underlying technology for that system no longer meets the functionality needs for AEI and will be retired in June 2020.

Goals and Benefits

To ensure continuity of operations for AEI, this project aims to integrate AEI data and business processes into Banner by June 30, 2020. By doing so, IEP students will be integrated into all systems on campus, thus providing an enhanced student experience and allowing partner units to follow standard UO operating procedures.

This project will provide the following benefits:

  • Enhancing the international student experience by providing them with consistent processes from the beginning of their studies on the UO campus to the end of their program;
  • Supporting conditionally admitted international students and Intensive English Program partners by making them visible to service-providing UO departments;
  • Streamlining the admissions and matriculation of conditionally admitted international students as undergraduate students at the UO;
  • Improving data resiliency and AEI system sustainability; and
  • Improving data reporting to support administrative decision-making.
