Sung-Woo Cho, PhD

Associate Vice Provost for Academic Data Analytics

Sung-Woo assists in enhancing the culture of academic data use across the university and promotes the use of advanced methods for predictive and evaluative purposes. Sung-Woo joined the UO in 2020 as a research associate professor in the College of Education, where he maintains an appointment. His main areas of interest are in machine learning applications in policy decision-making, research design and evaluation, and reforms in higher education. He has published numerous papers in higher education and public policy, including a study on community college students that has been cited nearly 1,600 times. Prior to joining the UO, he has previously served as a senior researcher at Abt Associates and the Community College Research Center at Teachers College, as well as a lecturer in applied statistics at The George Washington University and in research writing at Columbia University. He holds a BA in public policy and economics from Stanford University and a PhD in economics and education from Columbia University.

   
Paulo Cobbe, MS

Business Intelligence Analyst

Paulo is a member of the Integrated Data and Reporting team at the University of Oregon, where he promotes data-driven decision-making by providing technical expertise in data structure design, extractions, and dashboard development. Prior to joining the University of Oregon in 2017, Paulo worked for over 25 years in the software industry, 15 of which were in developing systems and intelligence solutions in higher education. Paulo is a former adjunct professor of Information Systems Management at UniCEUB College, Brazil. Paulo holds a bachelor's degree in business from UniCEUB College and a master's degree in knowledge and information systems management from the Catholic University of Brasilia, Brazil.

  
Grant Crider-Phillips, BS
Machine Learning Analyst

Grant supports the ADA unit through oversight of the Azure Machine Learning environment and application of probabilistic models, particularly in the field of text analytics. Prior to his work in ADA, Grant worked in projects and data analytics in the Office of the President. Grant holds a BS from Haverford College in mathematics with a minor in linguistics.

  
Nathan Greenstein, BA

Assistant Director of Machine Learning, Academic Data Analytics

Nathan helps the University understand, predict, and promote student and faculty success by harnessing data and machine learning. Outside the University of Oregon, Nathan supports the work of DESC, a homeless services nonprofit, as Policy & Program Analyst. Prior to joining the University of Oregon, Nathan helped conduct research on behalf of the federal government at Abt Associates. Nathan completed his undergraduate training in Cognitive Science and Urban Studies at Dartmouth College.

  
Austin Hocker, PhD

Director for Research and Engagement

Austin leads the Teaching Engagement Program’s efforts to create and support a culture of inquiry into student learning. He leads assessment projects for core-education requirements, supports academic units' assessment work, and partners with faculty to design and implement scholarship of teaching and learning projects. Austin holds a BS in exercise science from Linfield College and PhD in human physiology from the University of Oregon.

  
Claire Matese, MPP

Director of Student Success Analytics

Claire works collaboratively across campus to promote the application of analytics to foster student success. She also supports the larger goals of the Academic Data Analytics (ADA) unit by enhancing the coordination of and access to data sources. Prior to joining ADA, Claire provided analytical support to the UO as the Assistant Director of Institutional Research. She holds a BA in economics from Rice University and a master’s in public policy from the University of Minnesota.

  
Travis Shea, BBA

Business Intelligence Manager

Travis is a founding member of the Integrated Data and Reporting (IDR) team at the UO, which he now manages, supporting and promoting the use of the enterprise-wide data warehouse and business intelligence services. Joining the UO in 2005 as a web developer in the Office of the Registrar, he soon became involved in managing large-scale IT services. In his 15 years at the UO, Travis worked as a developer and leader in several departments prior to joining the Information Services team. Travis attended Gonzaga University where he received his bachelor of business administration in managing information systems.

  
Julie Wren, PhD

Assistant Dean for Accreditation and Assessment, College of Education

Julie assists the college with enhancing its accreditation and assessment infrastructure, increasing access and utilization of academic data, and supporting initiatives centered on student success. Prior to joining the University of Oregon, Julie worked in institutional research at the University of Illinois at Chicago as the associate director of data analytics in the Office of Institutional Research. Julie completed her undergraduate and master’s-level training in psychology and holds a PhD in research methodology from Loyola University Chicago.
