About Your Scholarship
Award: UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP
History of the Scholarship:
This endowed scholarship was established in 2007. As one of the first two buildings established in 1921 in what is now the College of Education, University High School, then part of the Eugene School District, was created as a laboratory school for the teacher training program in the College of Education next door.
In 2004, after a poignant and celebratory reunion of all alumni who had graduated from University High School, the reunion steering committee wanted to leave a lasting legacy at the site of their school.
Spearheaded by Alvin C. Stockstad (UHS class of ’44 – deceased) and Delores Damewood Moreland (’51), the reunion committee was determined that the money remaining after their successful reunion be put to good use at the college. Fond memories and detailed stories persist for Uni High alums, self labeled “guinea pigs” during their high school years in that they gave themselves to student teachers to train on. Many attribute their success stories to the creative and exuberant young student teachers and the outstanding education they received at University High School. Supporting a future educator was the natural outcome. More than 100 UHS alumni donated to the effort to create an endowment to support future educators.
The purpose of the Fund is to provide financial assistance to undergraduate, graduate, or post baccalaureate students majoring in Middle/Secondary Teacher Education at the University of Oregon.
