About Your Scholarship
Award: DAN CLOSE SCHOLARSHIP
History of the Scholarship:
The scholarship honors Dan’s legacy of outstanding teaching, mentorship, community engagement, and persistent efforts to make our world a better place. Dan retired from the University of Oregon Family and Human Services (FHS) in 2015, and this scholarship fund was created by a group of FHS faculty, staff, former students, and people in the University of Oregon community who have the privilege of calling Dan a mentor, colleague, and friend.
Val Taylor-Close was instrumental in bringing this scholarship to fruition. Val is the co-director for Early Childhood CARES, which provides early intervention and early childhood special education services to infants, toddlers and preschool age children in Lane County.
To provide scholarship awards to undergraduate students admitted to the Family and Human Services (FHS) Program at the University of Oregon. The scholarship awards may be used to assist one or more students with expenses related to attending the university, including but not limited to, tuition, fees, books, miscellaneous supplies, and room and board.
The award recipients will be selected on the basis of the following criteria:
• Undergraduate student(s) enrolled or expected to enroll in the FHS major at the University of Oregon
• If the FHS program is dismantled, then the scholarship will convert to a general College of Education scholarship to be used at the Dean’s discretion.
• Overall quality of academic work and achievement.
• Financial need, as determined by the University
• Preference given to a student who shows strong community involvement and promise in his or her chosen field.
• Preference given to a first generation college student
• Preference given for scholarship renewal in the senior year contingent on continued academic merit and demonstrated financial need.
The following people established and support this scholarship. In September, you will be asked to write a card to thank them as well as craft a personal testimonial to be sent to the donors.
