Old age and a will to carry on. All the things you’d expect from a former governor, Barbra Roberts in her old age continues on doing what she was born to do. Politics. Giving us her perspective of life in the office and her views at the time.
I asked her about change in Oregon. Barbra Roberts told me about the small town where she grew up in a male-dominated society with a lack of racial diversity. So fighting for women’s rights was a battle against female oppression that made people realize women had the same determination to succeed. The oppressed fighting for their equal rights caused the most change in our state and our country Roberts concludes.
Fighting for the people in the office was a good step for Roberts having years of experience. Being a former secretary of state, Roberts was aware of the current political climate with the support of her peers she fought to better the education system for kids that were diagnosed with disabilities, as well as supporting the LGBTQ community.
Even today in her old age Barbra Roberts still participates in politics stating “ I’ve still got some politics in my veins”. Promoting candidates for office spaces is one of the ways Roberts likes to stay engaged. Roberts likes to know who she’s endorsing, giving the candidates a lecture in ethics warning them she’ll withdraw her support if they do anything she opposes.
With more free time on her hands brings more incentive to grab a piece of stashed candy around the house. Roberts told me about her obsession with chocolate, her special treat. She has been an avid fan of the Portland Trail Blazers for many years watching every game no matter the score or what the predicted outcome might be.
Like many other people, Barbra Roberts is one of many people fighting for a better future. People gather together for strength, like the generation before us we must come together to ensure true equality for our fellow human beings.
