Student ID Card
To obtain a Student ID card, visit the Photo ID office on the lower level of the Erb Memorial Union (EMU). Your ID Card is used for free bus transportation on all LTD transit, for UO library privileges, and as a form of photo ID in addition to a driver’s license. You can charge your ID Card with “Campus Cash,” which can be spent across campus for printing services and more. For specific instructions, visit the UO Card Office.
UO Email Account (Web Mail)
To set up your e-mail account, go to the “Help Desk” in the South Lobby of the Computing Center (click for map). You will need to show your ID Card and have your PAC (Personal Access Code) number, as assigned by the Registrar’s office, to access DuckWeb. Email is considered the primary communication tool in AAD. Daily messages from the office, faculty announcements, job postings, and other important and time-sensitive information make it important to check email at least once a day. Please use the email listserve only for official and professional business of interest to program constituents. We will contact you via your uoregon email address, so be sure to set it up and provide it to Maia Howes, AAD Office Coordinator, as soon as possible.
Policies Regarding Use of UO Email Address
Sending email from non-UO accounts to AAD email lists can not only result in spam and harmful messages, it is also unprofessional and reflects poorly on individual students and the program. It is imperative that all students use their UO-issued email address for ALL communication related to their graduate education. If you are communicating with anyone at the UO or anyone connected to your studies, research, internship, or the development of a professional network, you must use your UO email address.
Security
While no system is perfect in terms of filtering out malicious hackers, the UO system is very secure and usually blocks most of this type of activity. In fact, the biggest criticism of the UO email system is that it is too good at filtering spam and sometimes filters messages that are legitimate. In the era of digital communication, it is everyone’s responsibility to monitor their junk box/spam filter to be sure that intended messages are coming through.
Automatic Forwarding to Another Email Account
We strongly discourage setting up your UO account to forward to another email address. The problem is that when you reply, the reply comes from the other account rather than your UO email address. This can set off the cycle of never accessing your UO email. Many email software programs allow you to create multiple user profiles on a single program. All of your email comes to one central email program, and when you send email, you can select the “user” or the “profile” you want so that it goes out using the email account that is appropriate for your communication. Or you can use the various web interfaces that nearly every email account system provides, so that you access your Gmail email or your UO email each from its web interface. For information on setting up an email program to send/receive email using your UO email account, visit http://it.uoregon.edu/help/email/
Signature Block
Some students use a signature block at the bottom of email messages. If you are using a non-UO email address, do not use a signature block that describes you as a “Master’s Candidate” or indicate in the text of an email that you are an AAD student.
Assistance
Contact the UO Information Technology office at (541) 346-1702 for questions related to managing your UO email account. It is possible that you will have to go to the Computing Center (in the lower level of McKenzie Hall, room 151) to set up preferences.
Each person will need to figure out a system that works best for them. The bottom line is that you are expected to use your UO email for all communications related to your graduate education.
