Art, Games, and Technology Research

In the reading, “Computer Graphics: Effects or Origins,” by Beverly Jones, she mentions her primary thesis which states that our current technology, art, and culture are all what they are now because of the past.  Our past cultural experiences have helped form our current inventions.  One of the three historical examples that Jones provided as an illustration of her thesis was “Nicholas Negroponte and the architectural machine group Seek produced experimental computer-controlled environments at MIT.  For example, they created an experimental computer-controlled habitat for gerbils in 1970. Another example of interactive environmental pieces is Bonacic’s computer-controlled sculpture featured in Leonardoin 1974. This sculpture received environmental input from sensors” (23).  A compelling and accurate illustration of Jone’s thesis at work in todays culture is how our technology today had greatly changed.  It has all changed because of people’s likes and preferences.  People invent things that they know consumers will want, so this shows how Jone’s thesis is at work.  We know what new things we want and need because of past experiences and how the people before us had to live.  Heather says, “Most people want to put their headphones in and listen to music rather than listening to another person. Videogames isolate all things from the world. Most people prefer technology today, just because that is all they know” (1).  She makes very good points.  Our past culture experiences showed that we could not listen to our own music and we were not able to isolate ourselves from the world.  Technology was able to fix all of these problems.  Technology has also been negative too though.  Kids as young as 7 years old have iPhones.  Phones also are making us less social.  In social situations people just go on their phones to avoid awkward situations.  Technology is both positive and negative, but overall the culture has made it more possible.
