I am currently an artist-in-residence and visiting scholar at the University of Oregon until mid 2015. The collaborative art/science ‘Third Culture Conversations’ of the UO and the Oregon Arts Commission led to my project ‘metaverses.’ It will be developed with neuroscientists and psychologists from the Institute of Neuroscience at the UO researching on brain networks (Michael Posner), optogenetics (lab of Cris Niell), visual working memory (lab of Edward Vogel), and stress and mindfulness research (lab of Heidemarie Laurent). In January 2015 a visual stimuli study will be conducted with a control group completing an Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) organized by the Laurent lab to study the potentialities of mindfulness practices and specific visual patterns on self-regulation, pro-social behavioral changes, and stress reduction.

The theme is based on the Third Culture: Beyond the Scientific Revolution.

Participants Needed for metaverses project:

To participate in the metaverses project — for cash or course credit — you will need to make (or already have) an account on the SONA system that the Psychology Department uses.  Go to https://uopsych.sona-systems.com/. Once on there, review the list of study names (metaverses/seecular/mindfulness visual stimuli study will be up soon). Then, dependent upon your individual schedule, sign up for a particular available time slot that works for you.

The project entails participation in an online survey 3x/week for 8 weeks. Each survey lasts 10-15 minutes (a simple 30-45 minutes/week), preferably taken on a computer anywhere you can access the internet. You would be viewing and responding to specific images shown in the survey.

Additionally, this is one of the optional “achievements” you can complete for the Art Meets Science class for additional credit. The images are related to our seminar topics so would be a great connection for you. We additionally think this would be an excellent way to report findings back to our class.

Notes from Hannes:
*Once signed up on the SONA site, it is easy to participate
**You can earn up to four credits through participation in the visual stimuli study.
***Or, if you choose, you can be paid instead of accruing credits
**** You may also sign up for a separate weekly EEG study (approximately 30 minutes/week) at the Vogel Lab (UO Institute of Neuroscience). For the EEG study, brain waves will be recorded while viewing images and choosing preferred images. All tasks should be fairly simple and would enable you to gain insight into scientific labs as well as imagery from various contexts.

If you have questions, please let Julie, Robert, or Hannes know.
