Greetings Art Meets Science Presenters!

Excellent work Thursday morning showing off the strong projects you have developed over the term. Our guests were quite impressed and pleased with your work.

One faculty member in the humanities noted that your projects are helping him think about more creative engagement for a course project next year. Hannes Bend (one of our guest artists) said he loved the variety of approaches and concepts that you explored. Marilyn Linton of First-Year Programs noted her delight in the professionalism of your visuals and overall presentations. Nicely done!

A few reminders for Monday of Finals Week (due by 5pm):

* Please submit Report 5/Final project paper
* Please submit your final journal entry (described below)
* Please feel free to add any additional components or make revisions to your project blog site
* Robert and I will send the links to your projects to UO colleagues before or during spring break.

Of course, feel free to continue working on these project sites as long as you want given your own interest in the subject matter, research, and other projects with which you engage during the course of your studies with the UO.

Final Journal entry: What did you learn about your project through the final display? What are your project’s strengths at this point? Weaknesses? What are opportunities you can build on if you would continue with this project? What may be threatening to or risking the best outcomes for the project? (Journal #23).

Greetings AAD 199 colleagues,

Thanks for sharing your great feedback about the class yesterday. We really appreciate it and look forward to further strengthening the class through our revision of it for next academic year.

Here are a couple reminders:

Thursday

Bring your laptops/other devices for showing off your websites. We will space tables around the room for each of you to set up and have opportunities to engage with our visitors.

For those of you that have physical objects to share (e.g. drawing journals, pamphlets/displays, photos, globes, etc.) bring those as well for additional supporting presentation. It will really set of your projects nicely!

If you have special needs for setting up your space or do not have a display device, please let us know right away so that we can arrange something for you.

Visitors will join us between 10:15-11:15.

Afterwards, we can walk to get some frozen yogurt and celebrate the work of the term together.

Monday, 5p.m.

Report 5 (your final paper) and your final journal entry are both due.

Throughout the term, we have been examining questions such as:

* What are artistic and cultural meanings of scientific images?

* How is scientific-based imagery displayed artistically and how do artists remix these visualizations in their own works?

Students have been exploring ways in which scientific images change meaning over time and become part of our visual culture. We have examined ways in which images in public spaces tell us stories about our lives related to science. Each student has studied the work of a specific artist working with a scientific problem and its related science throughout the term. Students will be sharing their final visual presentations and findings.

We look forward to your participation as our public audience.

Greetings Art Meets Science Museum visitors!

What a nice visit at the Museum of Natural & Cultural History this morning.  We only looked at two of the main galleries they have; yet, this gave us quite a story of contrasts for discussion.

Consider how you engaged (and will invite others to engage with your final project site) as an Explorer; a Facilitator; an Experience Seeker; a Professional/Hobbyist; and as a Recharger. How are these roles important to your own interaction with exhibit spaces, whether physical or virtual? How are they important to understand related to the audience you are attracting or seeking for your online presence?

Also, in what ways is your final project site provocative and emotional? In what ways is it instructional? What stories, personal and of great magnitude, are you telling visually and textually? What connections and understandings are being made?  What are the key elements to draw in participants?  How can you bring them in, share your findings, and then also lead them out toward other resources for more information or strategies for conducting additional research on the subject matter?

A reminder that there is a journal assignment due in response to today’s site visit. This should be reflective not only of today’s experience but a culmination of considering interactivity of objects and visual imagery as we have addressed it over the term.

On Tuesday, we will be holding important discussion and feedback about the course this term as well as our final open session for working on your blog sites.  Bring your questions, ideas, and comments!

Then, on Thursday, the first part of class will be devoted to sharing your blog sites with visiting guests. Please invite your friends, residence halls mates, club members, other course colleagues, and family. We’ve invited faculty and staff from First-Year Programs courses and advisory board, the Arts & Administration Program, the Teaching and Learning Center, and all guests and field trip hosts from the term.  Anyone is welcome to join us.

The second part of class next Thursday will be to head down 13th Avenue for some froyo in celebration of all your work this term.

Though many of us were tired during yesterday’s class, there is clearly also a great energy building around each of your projects as your ideas, creations, and blog sites are rapidly developing in creative and engaging ways.  We are  looking forward to sharing your work with others!

Thursday — Field trip!

Please meet at the Museum of Natural & Cultural History on campus rather than in our classroom space.  The museum is on 15th Avenue between Knight Law School & Global Scholars Hall, right across the street from the Bean complex. If you need further directions or want an initial introduction to the museum before our visit, please go to their website at http://natural-history.uoregon.edu/

Also, on Thursday, you will need to turn in Report 4, the draft of your final paper.  Reminder of the parameters for this paper are at https://blogs.uoregon.edu/aad199artmeetsscience/resources/assignment-resources/report-4/.  Questions to be addressed in this report and a suggestion of an outline to this paper are offered.  Remember that this report is the next iteration of Reports 2-3. The final version of this will be due next week (Report 5).  Remember to cite your annotated bibliography sources as well as support from course readings.

Final Exhibit Presentation — Week 10

Keep working on your exhibit development process in preparation for next Thursday’s final presentation. A reminder that your work will be shared with faculty, staff, and students throughout the UO via First-Year Programs, Arts & Administration, Teaching & Learning Center, all guests and field trip experiences we have had, and so forth.  Make certain you have a strong blog and presentation that you are ready to share publicly with others.

We’ve been asked to share the following important notice with you.

The UO VAX clinic will continue through Thursday at Mathew Knight Arena;  hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Students can also visit Safeway, Albertsons, or Walgreens pharmacies.

Of note:

• If students received a meningitis vaccine before October 2014, they are NOT covered for current meningitis strain.
• Starting March 2, insurance will be direct billed from one of the UO sponsored clinics at Albertsons, Safeway, Walgreens or Matthew Knight Arena, and no charges will made against student accounts.
• If students are uninsured, there is donated vaccine so all students will have access if they visit the Matthew Knight Arena clinic.
