Survey syllabus 2015

The class will learn the methods and process for conducting historic resource surveys in Oregon and Washington using standards established by the State Historic Preservation Office and the National Park Service.  Resource identification, terminology, description, photography, sketching, research and evaluation are integral components of the learning experience.  Class discussions will focus on all aspects of the survey and evaluation process and the use of survey results by various entities.

Class participants will receive training through lectures, required readings, discussions, research, and fieldwork.  Readings will pertain to survey, materials and construction evolution.  Grading will be based on attendance, participation and projects.

Students will record a variety of resource types in a neighborhood setting. The resources are primarily houses.  Class participants are expected to deliver accurate and complete assignments on schedule.  Fieldwork is the most important component of the course and is required.

This year, students will be conducting historic resource survey in the Jefferson Westside Neighborhood for their assigned projects both in and outside of class time.  Please be prepared for all weather and come with paper, pencil, and a camera to complete class activities. The instructor will be available to help students in the field.  Students enrolled in the course should be prepared to actively participate in class discussions.
