Design workshop for Taiwan visitors

Tutang Group

Industrial Design students from Tatung University participated in a three-day workshop on Food as Cultural Offering given by Architecture Professor Nancy Cheng and Product Design Professor John Arndt. After learning about Thanksgiving traditions, food production and design prototyping methods, they proposed how to package typical Taiwanese food for the foreign market. During the project review, University of Oregon professors and guests got to taste pastries, tea and candy that the students brought.

The visit was initiated by UO Professor Li-Shan Chou, through a partnership with Tatung Industrial Design professors Dr. Chih-Fu Wu and Dr. Wen-Yuan Lee. Prof. Chou and his Motion Analysis Lab team explained how equipment such as motion capture and impact sensors could be used to analyze stresses on the human body. The analyses can inform equipment design, medical intervention and physical therapy.

New Product Design faculty Kiersten Meunchinger and John Arndt to exhibit work at the Product Design Opening in Portland

Product Design Opening - Flow - John Ardt
FLOW By John Arndt, Assistant Professor

The UO School of Architecture and Allied Arts is proud to launch the new program in product design.  This program provides a thorough grounding in the use, invention and production of consumer products.  It integrates the theories and applied practices of the art, architecture, and design disciplines with business, humanities, and science.

This product design program uniquely exposes and expands on the significance of materials in products. Our students develop a deep understanding of how materials choices impact issues such as sustainability and ergonomics.  Our exploitation of materials produces innovative design work and it enhances the base principles of aesthetics, ethnography, economy, and engineering that are vital in today’s global design.

Your interest in being a rigorous, hands-on mission-driven designer makes you a perfect candidate for our B.A.,B.S. Or B.F.A. Degrees.

The application deadline for the Product Design Program is February 1.

West Coast Designers Participate in UO Bike Safety Charrette

As part of the Industrial Designers Society of America conference that took place in Portland April 25-27, the School of Architecture and Allied Art’s new Product Design Program hosted a design charrette in the new White Stag building. Organized in part by adjunct professor Zara Logue, the charrette challenged designers to think about ways cars and bikes can coexist in urban environments. The enthusiastic presenter, Greg Raisman of Portland’s Office of Transportation, gave the group some background on Portland’s growing bicycle community and the challenges of transportation design that suits both cars and bikes before turning them loose to design better street bike parking areas and traffic calming zones. Students, design professionals, and guests from PDOT, SCRAP, and BikePortland.org started sketching and after 30 minutes there was a lively review of the design proposals.

Everything from better speed bumps to beautified bike racks were proposed and Raisman helped the designers understand some of the different financial and physical constraints faced by the city. Clearly, this is a subject that deserves more design attention and the Product Design program looks forward to partnering with Portland’s Department of Transportation on future projects that could be implemented in several of Portland’s design districts.
