Students build a new porch for the Center for Advanced Sustainable Living

Students in Michael Cockram’s summer ’09 Arch 4/584 studio designed and built a new porch for the Center for Advanced Sustainable Living.  The porch uses sustainably grown and harvested FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified cedar to create long planters and benches. The main structural lumber that needed to be pressure treated was also FSC certified. Old pier pads were reused for the foundation of the planter boxes.  The group’s design also includes a second trellis canopy, an access ramp and an entrance walk of recycled bricks. Each student also envisioned an option for the garden and a self-sustaining living pod.
