Michael Salter: Styrobot

Michael Salter’s 21 foot tall Giant Styrobot was installed this past weekend as part of the upcoming Museum Exhibition, Robots:Evolution of a Cultural Icon. The massive installation examines the development of robot iconography in fine art over the past 50 years. Some of the artists in the exhibition include: Clayton Bailey, Chris Cunningham, Feric, Nemo Gould, Eric Joyner, Chico MacMurtrie, Mars-1, Michael McMillen, Michael Mew, David Pace, Nam June Paik, Alan Rath, Michael Salter, Lisa Solomon, Jeff Soto, Jason Van Anden, H.C. Westermann, Gail Wight, Kow Yokoyama, and Thomas Zummer. The exhibition is curated by SJMA senior curator JoAnne Northrup. The show runs from April 12th through October 19, 2008.

No, this is not about Ms. Pac-Man getting her degree. Much more than simple entertainment, video games are used to explore visual content delivery, roleplaying, reflective research practice, and complex design principles. We will discuss and show best practice examples of the use of video games in university courses and may give you the chance to test your own gaming skills! Robert Voelker- Morris, Teaching Effectiveness Program/ Arts Administration, will demo his video game module produced by the Center for Educational Technologies; Annie Zeidman-Karpinski, Science & Technical Services Librarian, will present on the Science Library’s video game collection.
