Studio time Sunday, November 16, 5-7pm + Building Bay Model Assignment / Clarification

Dear class

The work is moving along well.

Balance project integration (experience, structure, envelope, plan, section) and isolated design studies. Its all about, not exactly time management, but having a ‘good helicopter’ to be the ‘worker bee’ for 45 minutes an hour and the ‘project manager bee’ for 5 minutes an hour (and the ‘break bee’ for 10 minutes an hour). Consider Peter’s 1 1/2 hour cycle. As Steven Holl would tell us, ‘find the joy.’ Have fun. Look at examples (ex. El Croquis and Details in the library for breaks). Find inspiration projects.

I will be in studio tomorrow, Sunday, November 16, from 5pm to 7pm or later.  I can help with design intent to building questions, construction methods, precedents or software questions including Grasshopper. Perhaps use that feedback as a mini-deadline for yourself before Monday’s class. I’m trying to be helpful- not push too hard.

Building Bay Model Assignment:

As a design tool consider a working version of this model done in iterations immediately and not as a presentation model done immediately before the final review.

Scale– 1/4″ = 1′-0″

Objectives

  • Physically test human experience, design intent and construction;
  • Design tool to integration building systems

Method

  1. Choose. Test and choose a building bay. Consider one structural bay between two structural lines.
  2. 3D Sectional Perspective. Consider using your 3D Rhino model, making a copy of your working model showing only necessary elements for this physical model. Use the ‘SPLIT’ command in Rhino. Create a ‘sectional perspective’ in Rhino and draw in Illustrator. *This may take the place of a section, elevation and exterior perspective for your final- all-in-one large, integrated drawing (See LTL and Dill Scofidio for examples)!
  3. Study Model.  Make a quick study model of the massing (foam core, layered cardboard, etc). Consider this as a study for your Building Systems model.
  4. Envelope (facade). Consider a simple parti diagram of your elevation as per our Envelope/Facades’ lecture (datum horizontal or vertical, grid, constellation, etc).  Consider the Grasshopper wall system. Is this part of that system? It this a neutral wall, clear or solid? What is the quality to filter (‘affect’)? What are conditions of that affect? You may want to schedule laser cutter time in the next week to text your facade.

Materials- Wood, foam core, museum board, acrylic, 3D modeling material. Consider a solid base, cut flush with your section cut.

I would be happy to provide feedback Monday or Wednesday for the work above. A series of  3D parti drawings (each for volume, major spaces, circulation, experiential quality, etc) using media conventions would really help you and communicate too.

I hope the Koolhaas movie and cheesecake was inspiring. Sorry it was in German, Spanish and English.
