SECTIONS AND SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVES

Digital design allows us to understand spatial compositions in the human experience of three dimensions. You can design in 3D and extract key 2D plan and sectional geometry. The commands below will help. You will still need to add drafted elements (such as doors, windows, small walls, furniture, floor patterns) in CAD or Rhino 2D, and line weights in Illustrator.

3 Rhino commands to extract sections:

1. “Split”  Use a copy of your model, make a vertical plane and split the work.
2. “Section” This will extract the section cut. Take to Autocad or directly to Illustrator.
3. “clippingplane”  As pointed out in class, dont forget in properties to check off the appropriate view.

The GREAT thing about a sectional-perspective is that efficiently captures:  Section, interior experiential information and exterior elevational information. Even a quick capture from Rhino with some quick Illustrator might be great for those of you with a great investment in your 3D models (very commendable!). THINK LINES! Line weight, line type, text, highlight color/texture.

Remember, its all about process and growth- not about the pressure of a final product.  Enjoy the process.
