Patterning and tiling while left as a 2D graphic tool alone would only capture a small degree of its value.  The idea introduced earlier of a system as a unit, organization over variation may be considered in a two dimensional information, as well as a three dimensional graphic information but  we may also transform this geometric information to cause a sensory affect that is a new degree of information- qualitative.
