WALKABILITY IN EUGENE
For a city which could also be known as “Track Town, USA”, Eugene’s walkability is considered below average compared to many other of Oregon’s big cities (like Salem or Portland). The city of Eugene scores a total of 41 out of 100, according to WalkScore. Eugene is very much car-dependent, and this becomes an issue in many aspects. Inefficient transportation, air and noise pollution, conflict between vehicular and foot traffic… the list goes on. It is good to see that the city does provide the option of biking with the use of Peace Health bikes in the University District, but due to vehicular-dominant streets, Peace Health bikes can only be used at great caution. Aside from vehicular and bicycle traffic, foot traffic seems to have become overlooked in Eugene. The city is home to the University of Oregon, along with some other smaller colleges, but campuses are surrounded by streets that are mostly dedicated to the use of cars.
