Week 4: Tuesday, January 27th and Thursday, January 29th

  • Assign Urban Analysis Project and discuss outline of work for Thursday. Provide work time for formulation and research.
  • Review the Neighborhood Social Interaction framework. Answer questions.
  • Watch Carlo Ratti TED talk and discuss Data Access reading
  • Assign Evgeny Morozov video clip.
  • Testing urban characteristics and their indicators: geographic, off-site and on-site
  • GH Workshop: Remap and Domain (Use Portland Data Collection 1)
  • Mention Barcelona Urban Design 2015
    • Supplemental Workshop: Arduino 1
  • Formulation and Research, form partners
  • GH Workshop: Python CSV/OSM integration (use only)

Analog Parametric Operations

Week 5: Tuesday, February 2nd and Thursday, February 3rd

  • coordinate with studio mid-terms
  • Testing technique, abstract block – unit parcel, block and Super Illa
  • Assignment: 
    • Location Plan : location your test areas in 22@ or Barcelona (see Guallart drawings)
    • Outline: Purpose / Urban Design Criteria / Indicators…Measurement translations (number, types and or rating systems)
    • Parametric Method: Outline or list any GH plugins, Identify possible plugins to learn (HUMAN, ELK, GALAPAGOS, DIVA)
  • Assignment: Data Dictionaries: 1) Use 1-2 2014 BCN; 2) Propose 1-2 new for Thursday.
  • GH Workshop: Viz 1, Post-production workflow, baking z-lines, colors and thickness, Illustrator vs Photoshop (ex. Air Pollution Tool, UD&CL)
    • Barcelona Mtg 5-6pm; Class dinner, Wednesday evening, 6:30-8:30pm
  • **Presentation: findings, urban characteristics, limits, questions (possible invited guests)
  • Data Dictionaries: Develop with Ryan (preparation for Portland data collection)

  • Data Collection with Ryan, for Wednesday or Saturday data collection *Data Dictionaries
  • Indicator List: 1) existing geometry; 2) new off-site and 3) new on-site
  • Formulation diagram and initial Grasshopper work
