Shared Streets
From the definition, a shared street refers to an environment where people walking, people bicycling and people driving share the same space in a way that prioritizes the safety and comfort of pedestrians while allowing for movement of bicycles and motor vehicles. The funtions of shared street follow its location. In business districts, shared streets can greatly promote the development of public space networks, and increase vitality and activities through outdoor dining, public seating, artworks and beautifying the environment. In residential areas, shared streets become an extension of the front yard, a place to meet neighbors and build communities. The common treatment makes the streets safer for all users. The shared space may help us achieve walkable neighborhoods where topography, natural elements such as trees or other constraints may make construction of sidewalks cost prohibitive.
The issues of Barcelona
The noise issue in Barcelona is very common now. In Barcelona, the effect of noise is further aggravated by high concentrations of people living together. The noise pressure comes from road traffic, air traffic, railways and construction activity. The province of Barcelona is host to some 1,900,000 vehicles, representing a ratio of 0.4 vehicles per inhabitant. Tourists frequently stay late into the night playing music in the squares. the Old Town (Ciutat Vella) is particularly badly affected. Noise is an important factor affecting human health. Harmful environmental noise is defined as the noise level during the day, night and night exceeding 65-60-55 decibels, depending on the noise source. Over the entire day, more than half of the Barcelona population is exposed to more than 65 decibels of noise, which explains why locals have to shout to make themselves heard.
The air pollution is another concern. Private traffic is the main producer of pollution in the Barcelona Region. The number of private vehicles on the road grows every year. Although older vehicles are being replaced by newer, less polluting ones, the increase in the number of cars on the road has more than offset cleaner combustion. The building of ring roads has increased the use of private vehicles. Gas-fired heating systems and illegal burning of industrial material are other causes. Barcelona in summer period: It is estimated that over 66% of the population are affected by ozone levels in excess of 180ug/m3, and that over 66% of the population have been exposed to maximum NO2 levels in excess of 200 um/m3. These figures are above the recommended WHO levels.
Great.
Carefully just walk around our Superilla. Don’t record data. Just look. Look for all the things, or their indicators, of what you wrote about. Some are closed up and not there but it’s still worth looking at slowly and carefully. Do the same for the gótico. And then do the same for Gracia. This will help build a background for you. Then think again about an indicator list, or start with qualities.
Sound: user types. Think across age, income, caregivers.
Think about different neighborhoods.
What about sound is unhealthy? Limits sleep, daytime focus?
Frequency: low or high and how they travel and effect people.
