Migration of the Unhoused

Demographics

What: Migration of encampments in the west moorland area (18th and Chambers, Eugene)

Who: Homeless community

Why: To network data with position and time so that we can develop solutions which respond to community needs in real time.

Research and Reasoning

If a stranger were to walk thought the city of Eugene there’s a good chance that they would pick up on the fact that we have a large percentage of homeless. They would be right. The 2019 point in time count report stated there are 2165 total people experiencing homelessness (collaborated by Lane County). 426 of those individuals stayed in emergency shelters, 106 individuals were in transitional housing, and 1633 were completely without shelter. Since Eugene has the highest number of homeless people per capita in the entire country (432/100,000 residents), it is safe to say there is a need to gather data and propose real solutions. Our study will be an attempt at mapping where houseless people are choosing to sleep and make temporary dwelling. Over an intense week of data gathering we will determine where these individuals are living, what type of dwelling they have assembled, and where and when these people choose to migrate. We will also catalogue resources and events that may affect these movements. Our study and those similar will raise understanding of this community so that proposed solutions can be more specifically catered to address their specific needs.
