1.1 Research

I am interested in the concept of the “missing middle” in housing across our country. Single-family homes and large apartment complexes dominate the housing market where I am from in Ohio. After looking into organizations such as Congress for the New Urbanism, I am intrigued by the impact of rezoning cities to allow for more mid-sized housing units. Portland, Oregon recently passed a zoning reform designed to boost affordable housing through an increased allowance of mid-sized housing units. I think it would be interesting to investigate the current types and locations of housing in Portland. Then gather data on who lives where to consider how these current situations could be revised to assist with the affordable housing issues the city is facing.
