In Eugene it is no question that homelessness and a shortage of housing are a huge issue. Everywhere you turn you see tents up and not always in the best locations. There are more than 3,000 people who are homeless in Eugene and almost 2,000 that don’t have shelter every night.

It does not seem like  there are any new ideas in place to try to resolve this issue they are just pushing forward and enhancing the programs that are already in place. The problem is that the programs already in place don’t seem to be making a huge impact. A possible solution could be designating a spot  of land to the homeless for them to freely put their tents and their belongings so where they are staying is legal but also not in inconvenient areas.

When I was in Portland doing community service for the homeless there were these little neighborhoods on state given land where homeless people could reside and build a community there. Some would have tiny homes that the residence would build themselves or it would be tents or mobile homes. By doing this it gave homeless people a safe place to go and call home.
