Eryk Sysmans – Problem of Interest

Biking in Eugene:

While Eugene has many new bike paths and ranks high nationally on bike friendliness, ranking 3rd on an REI ranking, the bikeablity of the city is still an issue. There are only a handful of protected biking lanes in the city with most of them being around campus. The limited amount of protected bike planes makes it so that it is difficult to move around the city without a car. This makes it so that students can only stick to around campus and never venture into downtown. The lack of bike friendly routes creates disconnect between the university and its community as students who do not have a car cannot properly explore the town. With downtown having no protected biking lanes and narrow one-way streets, it makes it difficult to bike in the area. Forcing people to walk or drive rather than bike. What makes this situation worse is that there are not many places to lock up their bike if they did bike.

What may help the bikeability of Eugene is to have more protected bike lanes or by having pedestrian roads. This would make areas like downtown Eugene more livable and also encourage more university students to spend time there and feel connected to the area.
