  • Descriptive Paragraph: A meditative space requires an active sensory experience. Through the use of smell, sound, touch and texture, an individual can acquire the ability to achieve relaxation. The most successful meditation spaces have a sense of cohesiveness with nature. Sound, smell and sight are the most predominant senses when attempting relaxation. Through acoustics such as the noise of falling water or birds chirping have been proven to help lower stress levels and heart rate. Exposure to such noises while performing meditation decrease cortisol levels in the brain. Another method of relaxation is aromatherapy. Just like noise smell is a major factor in achieving relaxation. Smells that have been linked to reduce stress are; lavender, eucalyptus, chamomile, sandalwood, ylang ylang, and roses. Self-care and relaxation is especially important to architecture students. Losing hours of sleep can cause the body to naturally ease into a stress induced state due to the automatic response of the nervous system. If this is the case with architecture students, then architecture professionals must have it worse. Thus, my bathhouse/meditation center targets consumers in the architecture field.
