Josef Albers is a German born American artist and educator whose work, both in Europe and in the United States, formed the basis of modern art education programs of the twentieth century. He successively taught at Harvard University, the University of Mexico, and the Cincinnati Art Institute. Since 1950, Albers has served as the director of the design department at Yale University and settled in New Haven, Connecticut. During the United States, Albers created his famous minimalist works “Homage to the Square” series. His teaching also affected a large number of later modern American artists. Joseph Albers died in New Haven in 1976.
