Portfolio Tips

Key portfolio considerations:

  1. Make your cover page meaningful and unique to yourself.
  2. Have a brief resume + table of contents, but a headshot or image of yourself is usually not advised when applying within the US.
  3. Keep a consistent layout and text hierarchy, only use one or two typefaces.
  4. Tell a story with your visuals, keep text descriptions to a minimum as they are usually not read and can make pages unnecessarily complex.
  5. Show your BEST work, not necessarily all of it.
  6. Process diagrams / hand media / physical models are a nice touch to include sparingly.
  7. Check the expectations for each position that you apply for, many have specific page counts or other limits.
  8. Use your connections for feedback! Many of your professors and friends may have created portfolios for similar reasons and can assist you in the process.
  9. MAKE IT LOOK BEAUTIFUL
