01 From Object to Field
The field condition is not defined by an overall shape or individuals parts but by the connection between the parts and the space between the shapes. The focus of the field is on the “between things.”
02 Geometric vs Algebraic Combination
Algebraic principles work with “numerical units combined one after another”, while geometric principles of combination work in “lines, planes, and solids organized in space to form larger wholes.” When followed these principles of combination lead to different methods of growth and addition as seen in the examples of St. Peter’s in Rome and the Cordoba Mosque given by the author.
03 Walking out of Cubism
Post-minimalism reacts to minimalism by moving away from developing in sequences and solid construction and instead becomes more painterly and informal. Post-minimalism is more invested creating a “record of the process of its making in the field.”
04 Thick 2D: Moirés, Mats
As described by Allen a moiré is a “figural ground effect produced by the superposition of two regular fields.” Combined the two fields create something irregular and surprising from the separately regular figures.
05 Flocks, Schools, Swarms, Crowds
Flocks, schools, swarms, and crowds are all connected by the way their patterns emerge. They always want to grow and move in a direction. This structure does not change whether the grouping is small or large.
These look super great! I like how simple they are yet they are communicating exactly what you intended them to. Diagrams are intended to be simple but communicate a lot, which I think you did very well. One thing to consider is the line thickness within these diagrams. Specifically, in the 2nd set of diagrams, these would have read better if the line weights were varied a little more.
