- From object to field
Field conditions move from the one toward the many, from individuals to collectives, from objects to fields. “Field condition” refers to a loss unification of elements with their own identity preserved. The characteristics of ‘field condition’ in architecture and urban context can be extracted according to the description from the article. The way of promoting the idea is also like the bottom-up developing process that is implied in ‘field condition’.
- Geometric vs. Algebraic Combination
Geometric combination, which elements are unified through geometric relationship and form an entirety as a whole object. Algebra is described as an area in mathematics that uses variables, in the forms of letters and symbols, to act as numbers or quantities in equations and formulas. Their combination often occurs in the classical Western architecture and organize lines, planes, solids in the space of building.\
- Walking out of Cubism
Cubism is a way for objects are analyzed, broken up and reassembled in an abstract form. From the theory of cubism, the rise of minimalism was a reaction to the decorative and figurative character of European art. On the other side, Post-Minimalism is setting out either with intentions or random process, then by adding uncontrollable variables, the work has controllable frame and uncontrollable elements.
- Thick 2D: Moirés, Mats
There is no whole, but everything works together uniformly. An object within a field is not separate to the field it emerges from the field. When form is created, it is intrinsically part of the field. During the article, the moiré can be describe by math, line, or other form language. The sound can be written down and regular patterns are manipulated to create irregularities. A field is essentially expressed horizontally in plan.
- Flocks, Schools, Swarms, Crowds
“Field conditions offer a tentative opening in architecture to address the dynamics of use, behavior of crowds and the complex geometries of masses in motion.” A simple rule can create an organic order or group of people. A crowd is simply an accumulation of people that must have momentum, yet they can react in any way.
