Exercise 1.1a_Vikram Barretto

FROM OBJECT TO FIELD:
The idea of Field conditons focuses on the notion of interconnection of various components, for example those in a city,
through recursion of those various parts within the basis of a parti. Field conditon looks at the elements that tie these components
together and not as they are individually.

GEOMETRIC VS. ALGEBRAIC COMBINATION:
When thought about mathematically, or algebraically, many parts of something end up making a whole. In the western world,
this is what we are farmilar with. Geometrically however, this is not the same; An example of this that looked at structures
merely as parts that could be altered and replicated, pertaining to a parti, is seen in The Great Mosque in Cordoba.
The structure was formed though the geometric additon of parts to it over time.
“Parts are not fragments of wholes, but merely parts” (Allen 94).

MINIMALISM VS. POST-MINIMALISM (WALKING OUT ON CUBISM):
Minimalist and post minimalist works emerged from artists post WW2; Artists such as Donald Judd, Robert Morris,
Carl Andre, and Dan Flavin sought to connect art with architecture in a stronger sense through field connections. "Postminimalism
is marked by hesitation and ontological doubt where the minimalists are definitve; it is painterly and informal where the minimalists
are restrained..." (Allen 96). Allen remarks that minimalism along with postminimalism represents a significant turning point
in the prewar compositional principles with its reduction in formal tone and material usage.

THICK 2D: MOIRES, MATS:
The purpose of the Thick 2D field conditon was to redefine how think about and view the relation between the figure and the ground
of a site. Moires are figural relations that superimpose two or more regular fields on two each other. This often creates unexpected
results however not random in any way. Noting this Moires shift abruptly in scale and repeat and intertwine under complex mathematical
principles. In an urban context a moire is a horizontal graphic phenomenon but can be three dimensional like with most post modern cities.

FLOCKS, SCHOOLS, SWARMS, CROWD:
The idea of flock and crowd analysis revolves around the concept of movement and fluidity under certain controlled conditons, i.e)
Field conditons.
