From Object to Field
A concept made to highlight each element’s factors while also unifying all presented items as a whole. An idea made to enlighten each piece yet not overpower one element from the rest of the group. As detailed by Allen, this field condition “could be any formal or spatial matrix capable of unifying diverse elements while respecting the identity of each.” As expressed, this condition is meant to unify each piece while keeping in touch with their individuality.
Geometric VS Algebraic
A field condition that focuses on using classical elements while instinctively connecting all as a whole. This idea focuses on connecting each part through a series of regulations: axiality, symmetry, and repetitive patterns. Made to present the whole through hierarchy principles while simultaneously connecting them through the named rules, as the “Connections of classical architecture dictate not only the proportions of individual elements but also the relationship from larger wholes.” (Allen, 93)
Walking out of Cubism
A movement strived by artists involved in minimalism transformed this condition to focus on viewers’ space and body rather than typical compositions. As seen in the text and explained by Le Va, an artist who partly trained as an architect, these works were expressed as distributions rather than random or orderly sets.
Thick 2D: Moirés, Mats
This concept is driven from a moiré, “a figural effect produced by the superposition of two regular fields.” (Allen, 98) The Moire has unexpected effects, as the combination of elements demonstrates the complexity and acts irregularly. This idea is based on a mathematical rule of which measures the map of the presented figural forms.
Flocks, Schools, Swarms, Crowds
This condition strived from Craig Reynolds simulation made to analyze flocking bird behaviors. Through his studies, he found that the imprinted rules of his simulated flock proposed to be similar to those from a real flock, “conforming that “people” present a different dynamic, motivated by more complex desires and interacting less in predictable patterns.” ( Allen, 100) This principle composes that this field condition can act as a tool to address crowd behavior and their intertwined patterns.
