  1. From Object to Field

This idea of the relationship between objects and fields displays the transformation of how one idea develops and becomes something completely different. Through different processes, different elements are identified and can be tightly or loosely related to each other, creating a new composition. It is important to look at the individual elements of a composition rather than the shape as a whole to really understand its architectural form.

  1. Walking Out of Cubism

A specific idea from this section of the reading explained the way that minimalism is used in architecture as a form of storytelling. When taking a minimalist approach, different aspects are taken into account such as the use of materials and shape/ composition in order to convey the intended idea. The minimalist style doesn’t necessarily mean a design isn’t complex or interesting, but it does require one to think beyond the visible structures and more deeply understand the idea or goal that a composition is trying to accomplish.

  1. Think 2D: Moires, Mats

What caught my attention in this section was the relationship between figure and ground, and how we interpret that as designers. When trying to better understand that relationship, we look as a field and see how an object relates or connects to that field. This relationship can be understood both abstractly, and can also be created in a practical sense, but each of their purposes are related and work together.

  1. Flocks, Schools, Swarms, Crowds

The phenomenon of gatherings of flocks, schools, etc, displays the principles of pattern, repetition, structure, and many more. The way that birds create the same structure no matter the conditions or flock size shows the way that they’re able to accommodate and adjust for different situations. This study can be translated to understanding the ways that crowds form when it comes to people. This information is used to better create spaces by taking into account the way that crowds form geometries and how those designs can be altered to be the most accommodating to a particular location or situation.

  1. Distributed Institutions

A strong idea from this section were the principles such as hierarchy, axiality, and symmetry are all important aspects of classical architecture. Different structures utilize different shapes and principles in order to showcase their status or purpose. This concept is interesting because it highlights the way that styles and structures develop as societal shifts take place. Architecture is ever evolving for both societal and stylistic reasons and those behaviors play an important role in design development.
