The first Asian-African (or Afro-Asian) Conference was held in Bandung, Indonesia, in April, 1955.  Co-sponsored by Burma, India, Indonesia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the Bandung Conference brought together leaders from twenty-nine countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

The final communique of the conference focused on economic and cultural collaboration and incorporated the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.
