Day 1

Chem Demos with Dr. Randy Sullivan and a Special Guest!

Hydrogen Balloon Demo

No presidents were harmed in demonstrating the power of chemistry to high school students who visited the UO as part of SAIL – Summer Academy to Inspire learning!

University of Oregon President Michael Schill demonstrates an exothermic reaction by detonating a balloon filled with hydrogen gas using a candle on the end of a stick.

Great start to this week’s 2018 SAIL Chemistry Camp!

Ethanol Cannon Demo

A spark from a Tesla coil is used to ignite ethanol vapor in a bottle, propelling a cork upward. Exciting!

Liquid Nitrogen Balloon Demo

Liquid nitrogen is poured over a balloon filled with air. The balloon shrivels as the volume of the air decreases. The balloon is pulled out of the liquid nitrogen and placed on the tabletop. It rapidly reinflates. This is a good, simple demonstration of Charles’ Law, the volume of a sample of gas is directly proportional to its temperature in an expandable enclosed container such as piston or a balloon.
