This two-day weekend workshop introduces undergraduate students to conceptual, aesthetic, and real-world essentials for effective arts related journalistic storytelling using Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras. During the weekend, student teams profile prominent Portland artists at work in their studios. The workshop is offered in cooperation with Portland Open Studios and coincides with the organization’s annual tour event. Students will produce a multimedia feature and an accompanying written story for a final website.

You will learn:

  • Essentials of effective storytelling
  • Interview and “B” roll capturing skills and strategies
  • Optimal use of lenses and light
  • DSLR shooting and editing practices and workflows

Only 18 students will be selected. Interested undergraduates must apply online and provide the name of a faculty or GTF reference.

Selected students attend a mandatory meeting at Allen Hall on Friday October 4, from noon to 1:50 p.m. (one week before the workshop), where they will be assigned to two- or three-person teams — and given their team’s artist story assignment. During the week leading into the workshop, team members are responsible for determining their individual accountabilities, conducting research, and planning how they will execute their assignment.

Saturday morning, October 12, students will carpool to the SOJC’s Turnbull Center in Portland for the first session. Following a morning of instruction, course teams will visit their assigned artist at his or her studio to produce a profile story. Teams will review their footage overnight, and return to the Turnbull Center Sunday morning prepared to edit their stories. The  Sunday session will include instruction on workflow strategies and post-production techniques. Edited works will be screened and critiqued Sunday afternoon at the conclusion of the workshop, prior to return to Eugene. The best projects will be distributed via regional mainstream media.

Students will carpool to and from the Turnbull Center in Portland; hotel lodging shall be covered and gasoline will be reimbursed. Students are responsible for their meals.
