The University of Oregon (UO) Libraries’ Oregon Newspaper Project (ONP) microfilmed Oregon’s newspapers as a public service since the 1950s. By providing access to Oregon’s history, these microfilms have been an invaluable resource for libraries, individuals, and organizations throughout the state and have been the foundation of the Oregon Digital Newspaper Program (ODNP).
Due to increased costs associated with microfilming equipment and supplies, in addition to the increasing demand for digital access to current newspapers as opposed to microfilm access, the ONP is transitioning from microfilm to digital for preservation of and access to current Oregon newspapers to become part of the Oregon Digital Newspaper Program (ODNP). Newspapers published in 2015 and beyond from participating publishers will be available via Historic Oregon Newspapers online beginning in 2016.
