About the award

The Pete von Hippel Graduate Scholar Award was established in Fall of 2009, at the 50th Anniversary Celebration for the Institute of Molecular Biology. Pete von Hippel is widely viewed as having for many years been the “heart and soul” of the IMB, combining both outstanding research accomplishments with generous and collegial service to his Institute and University. Thus the award seeks to recognize a senior PhD graduate student both for their outstanding performance in thesis research, and for their concern for fellow students and colleagues during their time here as PhD students. The award includes a plaque and a cash prize that can be spent on research related expenses of the recipient’s choice. Our goal is to grow this fund such that it can provide one full year of support for a senior IMB PhD student each year. Currently we have received about $50,000 in donations; to fully support one student each year, our goal is to reach a total of $1 million in donations.
